[Witch Way] Volume #1 Issue #10 -- Ostara 2009
March 13, 2009
Hi, Happy Ostara!

Ken's Korner

Hello, and welcome to another issue of Witch Way!

One of the main themes of CyberWitchcraft, has been to show you how Witchcraft can make a difference in your life.

I get emails all the time asking me why thereís no section on magick at the site. It seems that most people think that having just the right spell, will somehow change their life, and make everything better.

These people arenít Witches, theyíre desperate people seeking desperate solutions. The key isnít having the right spell, itís having the right attitude. Until you create an attitude of success, you wonít ever achieve it.

A perfect archetype of this is Eeyore, the clinically depressed donkey from Winnie the Pooh.

Have you ever noticed that no matter what great things happened in his life, he just never found any benefit to it? Itís not that good things didnít happen to him, he was just so caught up in his own problems that he refused to see them. This happens all the time to people, especially with the economy the way it is now.

People are becoming desperate because they donít feel they have any control over their lives. This couldnít be further from the truth. Your life as it is this very minute, is the culmination of the choices youíve made. Good decisions end in good results, bad decisions end in bad results. Even the good choices can sometimes look and feel like bad ones.

Let me give you a personal example. I had a stable job back in 2007. It was permanent, it wasnít going anywhere, but unfortunately, neither was I. So I chose to change jobs and take a contract to work I.T. I much prefer that to the call center job I had that was stable. It paid much better too, but it was temporary. I knew this going in.

The contract ended July of last year, and I really havenít been employed since. I ended up losing the house I was renting because I couldnít pay rent, I have almost lost my truck, the sole means of transport that I have, and several other things have happened, including the loss of the woman I love most dearly. I am writing this article from the basement of a house that friends are letting me stay in. (Itís good to have friends!)

So no matter how bad your situation may be, understand that Iím not preaching from some mountain top. Iím down in the trenches just like you. Even with things as bad as they are, and donít believe for a moment that the economy is going to somehow get better anytime soon, Iím not feeling desperate. Iím not looking for some mystical solution to just happen. Oh, I have before, and was sorely disappointed.

Now, am I saying that magick canít help? No, Iím saying that only you can help yourself, and Witchcraft can be a tool. Every part of Witchcraft can help you to build your life into what you want it to be.

The Spiritual side of the Craft gives you something greater than yourself to believe in. It shows you that you are not alone, that someone cares.

As I have said in Invoking the Gods, when you talk to Deity, you are really talking to yourself. You are talking to that part of you that is connected to everything else. You are not alone, you never have been, and you never will be.

Use the strength of those around you. You are a Witch, think like one. Witches work with energy all the time, not just in ritual. Use the strength of those you are connected to, and realize that you are in control of your life.

There is also the magickal side. Again, itís not about having the right spell, itís about understanding that you can have anything you want, if you are willing to do what is required.

People are basically lazy. They want everything given to them. Letís face it, if you had the choice between a million dollars for doing nothing, and a million dollars that you had to work for, which would you take? I rest my case.

People are always looking for the easy way out. Thatís not always a bad thing. Every invention we have today, was because it made life easier than it was. Driving a car is certainly easier than walking. Indoor plumbing is easier than fetching water from the stream. Finding the easy way to do things can be good.

Desire for the easy life only becomes a problem when you feel that you are entitled to it just because. Itís fine to believe that you deserve the easy life, as long as you are willing to put in the work to make your life easy. Put in the hard work now, so that you can have things easier later. Thatís the American Dream.

I started CyberWitchcraft as a business, with the intent of making money. I have my first product out, and Iíve even made sales. Running a business is hard. I work harder at this, than Iíve ever worked for any boss, and I love it! I have other business interests that Iím getting into, that promise great wealth. I deserve great wealth, and Iím willing to put the work in to get it. It's all about the attitude.

So to those of you who are feeling sorry for yourself, you have a choice to make. Are you Eeyore, or are going to start looking at the good things around you? Once you start to see the good things in life, you find your life is much happier, and you also see the opportunities that it presents to you. You might be surprised at how fast things can turn around.

As for me, I got another contract. I should start work in the next week or so, and by the time the contract is up in six months, I expect to have my other business interests to a point where I wonít need to look for another job to support me.

Attitude is everything in Witchcraft.

This Monthís Issue

Weíre starting two new columns this month. These will be regular features for the foreseeable future. Chironís Lyre is written by Jim Trader, who also wrote four articles in the astrology section. This will be a monthly look at what the stars have in store for you. Itís a combination horoscope and astrology lesson, written in plain English.

In this first installment, Jim explains that Venus is now retrograde, and what that means to you. If your love life isnít what you think it should be, youíll want to be sure to read this article carefully.

The Kitchen Witch is my friend of many years, Allison Anthony. She has a quirky way of looking at things that I think youíll enjoy. This column is going to be different than anything youíve ever read in Witchcraft circles.

Allison works her magick with food, so in this first column, not only does she talk about Rosemary as a magickal herb, she also teaches you how to cook a great leg of lamb. If it has anything to do with magick in the kitchen, The Kitchen Witch will likely cover it, and what better way to improve your life than to learn how to feed your mind and your body well?

I'll see you here next month for Beltane.

Blessed Be,

Chironís Lyre

A Monthly Column For Astrological Insight

Chiron
From March 6th to April 16th 2009, Venus will be retrograde; that is the planet Venus, as seen in our night sky, will appear to go backwards in its orbit. Astrologically speaking, this is probably the most important general influence on people and events in March and early April.

Why is this so important?

First, it is relatively rare; of the planets that retrograde, Venus does so the least. Since Venus goes retrograde least often, its influence while retrograde can be hardest to adapt to for those not prepared for it.

Venus rules romance and the feminine, and since a planet going retrograde often means retracing old ground under what the planet rules, one could conclude that this March and April may not be as conducive to new romance as spring is traditionally thought to be.

Since Venus is also sometimes known as the Lesser Fortune (Jupiter being the Greater Fortune), it could also possibly indicate a reversal or re-examination of recent good luck; there may have been some unexpected fine print in a gift or happy coincidence in oneís life.

But more importantly than these other things, Venus rules value systems: Who, what and how we ďloveĒ in our lives. When looked at from this point of view, Venus going retrograde means that we take another look at the people and things we value in our lives and ask ourselves ďdoes this really make me feel good?Ē

How well each of us answers that question may define how comfortable each of us is in our own skin for this year and much of the next, since Venus does not go retrograde again until October 2010.

Just as important as the fact Venus is going retrograde is what Sign Venus is in, and how Venus relates toóor ďaspectsĒ other planets as it retrogrades. A retrograde planet moves backwards not only in its own orbit, but backwards through the Signs as well.

When Venus goes retrograde it will be in the very middle of the Sign Aries (15 degrees, each Sign having 30 degrees counted as 0 through 29), and will travel all the way back through the beginning of Aries into the last degree of Pisces (29 degrees) before appearing to move forward in its orbit again. This is also called ďgoing directĒ.

The Sign Aries indicates action, impatience and individuality; since Aries is so focused on the self, this Venus retrograde may have less to do with relationships and more to do with actions we need to take for ourselves.

Venus retrograde in Aries indicates there may be new things we need to do or new projects we need to start, but we canít get started on them because we have prior commitments we must fulfill. This will probably be true for the entire forty days of Venus being retrograde, and possibly as long as through April 25th when it re-enters Aries (a total of forty nine days) after going direct.

Mars could help Venus lessen this delay; Mars conjuncts (is one degree or less away in the sky from) Venus the 21st through the 24th, and enters Ariesóthe Sign it rulesótwo days ahead of Venus (April 23rd) while still conjunct Venus.

Mars is all about taking action and moving forward, so when it conjuncts another planet, the drive to take action in its sphere of influence is increased. Marsí influence is further amplified by Mars entering the Sign it rules (Aries).

Whether the wait is forty days, forty five days or forty nine, the uncomfortable delay will give us all the necessary time to get totally ďdoneĒ with what weíve been doing, and allow us to move on without second thoughts or unhealthy attachments.

From March 9th through the 13th (a Monday through Friday, incidentally, with a Friday the 13th topping it off) Venus will be sextile Jupiter. A sextile occurs when two planets are 60 degrees or so apart; this aspects indicates that the planets involved create pleasant opportunities for each other.

This is a fantastic aspect, especially when the planets involved are Venus (the Lesser Fortune) and Jupiter (the Greater Fortune). Jupiter will be in mid-Aquarius when this is happening, which tells us that although we may be delayed in the new projects we need to take on, this week will give us a new and better vision of what is possible once we get started.

It could also mean that an apparent ďreversal of fortuneĒ earlier in March was really a blessing in disguise; we may see that an action that looked like a good idea earlier would have really been hurtful, if it had been taken.

Finally, during April 3rd through the 5th (the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of April) Venus will square Pluto, right as Pluto begins to go retrograde (more on Pluto in next monthís article).

A square occurs when two planets are 90 degrees from each other, and generally indicates that they work against each other. In this case, there may be a feeling of hopelessness or powerlessness during this weekend; it may seem like the great new thing we need to make happen will never happen because we are buried under old responsibilities.

Rest assured this feeling is only temporary, and that new doors are opening. There may be a temptation to fight the feeling of powerlessness by going out that weekend and making something happen right away. That may not turn out well.

Planning a get-together with friends for the weekend or a taking a few days off to sit in your jammies and surf the Web may turn out better, and leave you refreshed and ready to get back to it on Monday the 6th.

As Venus nears the end of its retrograde period, it will re-enter the Sign of Pisces, coming from Aries on the 12th through the 16th of April, then go direct, moving back into Aries. This may create a feeling of apathy, or that ď[sigh] itíll happen when it happensĒ regarding the new task or project to be undertaken.

Donít be fooled; the time is now (mid- to late April). Although you may have to wait for a push, you wonít need to wait long with Mars conjuncting Venus on the 21st. Get ready to leap into a fun new tomorrow.

Time of The Season

Back in February, we did an exercise to clear the fields of your mind of all the leftover baggage that you no longer need, in order to make way for new things to come into your life.

Itís now coming up to Ostara, and time to plant.

This is the time where you till those mental fields, and plant the seeds of whatever it is that you want to reap this year. The seeds are simply thoughts and ideas that can be nurtured and grown.

What is it that you want this year to bring you? Think carefully. Most articles will give you examples and ideas of what you should bring into your life, Iím going to try not to.

What you want is a personal decision, and there is no way for me to know what that is. There is also the problem of contamination. If I start throwing out ideas, you may decide to use one of mine, instead of what you really want.

This isnít about choosing the right idea, itís about how to focus on the want or desire so that you can manifest it properly. Whatever it is that you want to bring to you, no matter how big or small, the process is the same.

People seem to think that they canít cast a spell to get something big. They think the bigger it is, the harder it is to get. To this, I can only quote Yoda, ďSize matters not!Ē Itís not how big a desire is that causes the problem, but your ability to wrap your mind around it. Itís all in the details.

Letís take a money spell as an example, and this is only an example. Most Witches have a real problem with money. They think itís wrong to cast spells for large amounts, or any amount at all. I donít understand this reasoning. The reason for becoming a Witch, is to create a better life. If money will do that, why would you limit yourself?

The other problem is that most people donít really know what it is they really want. Ok, you want money...how much? Give an exact amount. A lot of money means nothing to the Universe. A thousand dollars may be a lot of money to you, but itís an hourís work to a millionaire.

If youíre going to put out to the Universe that you want money, you must specify exactly how much, or youíll get an amount the Universe deems adequate. This could be more than you expected, but more often, itís much less. Take the randomness out of your spell.

So now you have an exact amount in mind. Be sure that it will cover whatever it is you plan to use it for. What do you mean you donít have any plans for it? If you donít have a use for it, why are you asking for it? This isnít a game!

You donít cast spells for things just to see if itíll work. It wonít. In order for magick to work, you must know exactly what it is that you want, why you want it, and how you will use it.

You must be able to see yourself already having that desire fulfilled. If you canít visualize or in some other way prove to yourself that you should, and can have the desire, you wonít get it.

Magick really is more scientific than mystical. When you cast a spell, you are changing your internal mindset. You must not just believe that you can get the desired result, you must know you can, and whatís more, you must know that you deserve the desired result.

If you donít think you deserve a million dollars, you will never get it. Why do you think no one wins the lottery with magick? Sure, it would be nice to have that kind of money, but who seriously believes that they can actually win?

On top of that, who really thinks they deserve that kind of money? Until you know for a fact that it belongs to you, you will never be able to manifest something. This is why most Witches never manifest more than the smallest things.

This is also why love spells are so effective, and dangerous.

Itís easy to tell yourself that you deserve someone to be happy with. Itís human nature. Everyone wants another to share their life with, and the emotion you put behind the desire is designed by Nature to be extremely strong. We are biologically driven to procreate, and for that, we need a partner.

So what if you could take that need, that entitlement you feel of having a mate, and instead put it toward some other goal? Remember, magick doesnít work in a vacuum. A very close friend of mine, who is also a very successful entrepreneur, is fond of saying that if you want something bad enough, youíll do whatever it takes to get it.

Magick works on the same principal. You have to want whatever you desire bad enough, to do whatever it takes to get it. The magick simply helps you change your mindset so that youíll do what it takes to get your desire.

If you look at any spell, the usual process is to visualize the object of the spell as though you already have it, not getting it, not wanting it, but already having it.

Why is that?

We all have an internal thermometer that determines what weíre comfortable with having, our sense of worth. If someone just gave you a new Porche, youíre most likely response would be to try to turn it down. You donít deserve a car like that, and certainly not as a gift!

That is your internal thermometer telling you what youíre worth. Youíre not worth the car, so youíre first instinct is to turn it down. Now I know you may be thinking that this response is social. Itís not right to accept a car from someone just because they want to give it to you. If you had no doubt that you deserved the car, youíd accept it without hesitation.

Picturing yourself already having the desire, when you cast the spell is a way to reset that internal thermometer. Just like the one in your house, you can set it higher or lower, it just takes a little time, and practice to do it at will. The successful Witch knows how to accept what he or she wants.

An Exercise In Accepting

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to give a woman a compliment? You tell an attractive lady that she is pretty, she blushes, and stammers, and puts up her hands as if fending off an attack. She doesnít believe that sheís pretty, so she does everything except the one thing she should do, say Thank you.

Itís even worse with men.

If you are going to plant a seed that you want to grow, you should expect a result. I mean, if you donít expect something to happen, why waste your time? Yet this is exactly what most Witches do when they are first starting. They cast spells hoping for a result, not expecting one.

I want you to think of something that you want to get before the end of the year. It should be fairly sizable, since youíve got many months to manifest it. Spend a few days or even weeks looking for what you really want your life to bring you. Reach for it. Make it something that you know wonít come easily. Something youíll have to work for.

Money is easy. If you have a job, you get money all the time. Make this something that you think is out of reach for you. A new car, a house, something that you feel is too much.

Use your imagination, but donít make it too far out of reach. You need to truly be able to believe that you deserve whatever it is.

Take your time, work out the details of what this thing is in your mind. If itís a house, what color is it? What type of neighborhood is it in? How many floors does it have? What does the front and back yard look like? How is the kitchen laid out? Does it have a basement? Is that basement finished? How many bedrooms and bathrooms does it have? Where are they in the house?

Whatever it is you want to manifest, you must know everything about it intimately. Otherwise, how will you know when you get it? You must be able to see and feel this desire as though you already have it. You must also know that it is yours, you just havenít gotten it yet. Itís a wrapped birthday present. You know itís yours, you just havenít opened it yet.

While you are working out just what you want to manifest, I want you to look in the mirror every morning and tell yourself that you deserve what you want.

I always thought self affirmations were silly. They look silly, they sound even sillier, but the fact is, they work. If you canít look yourself in the mirror, and tell yourself out loud that you deserve something, no matter who may hear you, what do you think your chances of getting it are?

So, every morning when you are getting ready, I want you to take a moment and say the following to yourself out loud. Youíll know itís working when you no longer worry who might hear it, and even more so when you say it loud enough to be sure others do hear it.

ďI am worth a million dollars.Ē (if you feel youíre worth more, make it more)
ďI deserve whatever I can desire.Ē
ďI have the ability to bring anything I desire to me, no matter how big it may seem.Ē
ďThe only thing keeping me from what I desire, is me.Ē

I want you to do this every morning for the next 31 days, until you get the next Witch Way. I want you to say this to yourself, and mean every word of it! If you just say it, youíre only going through the motions, and that doesnít work. You must mean it.

If you are going to practice your Craft, you must practice every day. Anyone who plays an instrument understands that the more you play, the better you get. This is no different.

By the next issue, when weíre ready to cast the spell, you should not just believe that you deserve what you want, you should know it.

The Kitchen Witch

Hello, I'm the Kitchen Witch and I'd like to share with you my knowledge of food combined with wonderful, fun folklore in the kitchen. I am the daughter of a chef and have served as his dogsbody (poor chump who does the grunt work) for 15 years in his personal kitchen. I am also a wife and mother of 2.

I hear people all the time complain that they don't have the time or the knowledge to be a really good cook; well I can help with that. While I can't wave my magic basting brush and add time to your day, I can give you easy recipes and in addition share some fun facts about the ingredients.

Some of the recipes are edible and some are therapeutic, but all are easy.

One of my favorite herbs I love working with is Rosemary. My kitchen smells rich and alive when I work with it. Rosemary is one of those herbs that when you work with it fresh, not dried you will find a little goes a long way.

It is an herb that can be grown year round, weather you live in a climate that permits you to grow it out doors year round, or a colder climate where you can simply bring in its pot during the winter.

I have lived both in California and Colorado and have grown it both places. If you do not have a green thumb of any shade you can also pick it up in the produce section at your local super market.

My home is surrounded in tall hedges of Mediterranean Rosemary. It was once said that if you plant rosemary by your gate it will keep evil sprites and elves out, while some believed it invited good faeries and sprites in. Some said that a home where rosemary grew was ruled by a strong woman.

While the Native Americans burned sage to drive away evil spirits, in Western Europe they used rosemary. It was thought to help memory and fidelity. For that it was at one time tucked into a brideís bouquet, so she would Ďrememberí who she was to be faithful to. Greek students braided it into their hair before exams to improve memory.

Weather you love its folklore or its flavor, knowing how to apply it in your kitchen is the best part. Rosemary is a savory herb and goes well with meat. I use it when I roast lamb.

Roasting a boneless leg of lamb is actually very easy.

You will need

1 boneless lamb roast (about 4 Ĺ-5 pounds raw)
2 sprigs of rosemary (off the stem and well diced, about 1 tablespoon diced)
3-4 cloves of garlic (chopped)
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt & pepper to taste

Tools you will need

A roasting pan
A knife
A meat thermometer
Cooking twine also known as butcher string
A pre-heated oven at 400 degrees

First you will see a fishnet around your boneless lamb; I take this off and throw it away. Then I open up the lamb and trim off the excess fat so there is only a little on the outside.

This will help keep it moist as it roasts. Then I rub the inside and out with olive oil, enough so it is covered but not dripping. I rub the lamb with half the rosemary and garlic then season with salt and fresh cracked, pepper on the inside of the roast.

Once you have done that roll up the lamb and tie it tight. Rub the outside with the rest of the rosemary & garlic, salt and pepper.

Always remember when you salt something if you do not add enough salt, you can always add more but once you've added it you canít take it out, so be careful.

Once the roast is tied, place it on the roasting pan and put it in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes turn your oven down to 375 degrees and roast for another 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how done you like your meat.

To find that perfect level of doneness you should always pull your meat early and wrap it in foil. This is the Ďcarry overí cooking time; because the outside of the roast is hotter then the inside, it continues to cook after it is removed from the oven.

If you wish to have a roast that is medium, you are looking for an internal temperature of 140-145 degrees, to achieve this you need to remove the roast when its internal temperature is 130-135 degrees, then wrap it in the foil and place on top of a cool stove for about 20 minutes.

For a rare roast you should remove it when the temperature is 125 and follow the same wrapping direction until the internal temperature is 135 degrees..

The internal temperatures for a boneless leg of lamb are 135 degrees for rare, 140 for medium and 160 for well done.

Oven temperatures very so check your meat with a meat thermometer.

Side Dish

A wonderful accompaniment with the Lamb is roasted Potatoes. This recipe uses the same herbs as the lamb so it is easy to do.

You will need the following;

2-3 lbs of red potatoes washed and cut.

I like to cut them into 8ths, itís really up to you as long as they are all the same size. This will insure even cooking for the whole pan.

Olive oil, about 3-4 tablespoons
1 small sprig of rosemary diced, about 1 teaspoon
2 cloves of garlic diced
Salt & pepper to taste

Combine all of the above in a large mixing bowl and toss until all the potatoes are covered. Pour coated potatoes into a medium baking pan and bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes. The cooking time will vary depending on the size the potatoes are cut.

Remove the potatoes when they are done. You will know when they are done when you can stab them with a fork and they are tender.
