Amalthea's Horn

Welcome to Amalthea’s Horn, online home of Jupiter Rising Astrological Services author of the newsletter column Chiron’s Lyre.

In Greek mythology, Amalthea was the goat/goddess who cared for the infant Zeus when he was hidden from his father, Kronos. After Zeus had grown into manhood and overthrown his father, Zeus returned to Amalthea, and presented her with a horn forever overflowing with food, drink and flowers. 

In this way Zeus returned the gifts of food and shelter Amalthea had given him, ensuring that she would never lack for food, drink, or beauty. The term “cornucopia,” and its traditional image of a horn-shaped basket overflowing with food, originated with this myth.

Rather than overflowing with fruits and vegetables, this incarnation of Amalthea’s Horn is meant to overflow with food for the mind, emotions and spirit. 

Although knowledge “of” astrology has become much more common in the last thirty years or so than it was earlier in the 20^th Century, knowledge “about” astrology, especially on how it is best applied on a daily basis to strengthen relationships and best adapt to the world we all share, is still very much lacking compared to earlier centuries. 

The abundance of astrological information presented by this website is meant as a step towards correcting this lack.

Throughout human history, people have relied on astrology to predict the best times for significant life-events, from when to plant a crop to when to have a wedding to who would be the best new Emperor. 

Every major civilization in the West and Near East for the last twenty seven hundred years, from the 6^th Century BCE Chaldeans in Mesopotamia, to late 20^th Century United States, has relied on astrology and has not been disappointed. 

Nancy Reagan began using astrology after the assassination attempt on her husband, to make sure another didn’t happen. Presumably it was effective, since there was never another attempt as far as I know. 

Yet what was an indispensible tool for both the peasants and aristocrats of earlier centuries (and even some of the “aristocracy” of late 20^th Century America), has been dispensed with by mainstream society in early 21^st Century America. 

This is probably not because the U.S. is a “Christian” nation; Oliver Cromwell—the 17^th Century leader of England so fierce in his Christian beliefs he locked up shopkeepers who did business on the Sabbath and women who bore children out of wedlock--consulted astrologer William Lilley during his reign. 

It is not because astrology was ever proven largely ineffective either. Whatever the reason, early 21^st Century America has lost a valuable tool in keeping in touch with itself and the wide world around it.

It’s time to reconnect.
