Gods, Godesess and Dieties

by Jackie
(Queensland, Australia )

Im really new at the whole witchcraft thing, to me it sounds facinating and I really want to give it a try but there are a few things still unclear to me, like I do not really understand how you choose your god or deities or even if you do.

You talk about invoking the gods when you cast your first circle but which ones do you invite.

I'm not up to that yet but I would really like to understand it a little more before I attempt it. can you help?

Invoking Gods
by: Ken

Hi Jackie,

You will find that there are many beliefs, and most everyone believes something different.

Kim talks about there being only one God and Goddess, and all the others being reflections. I look at it slightly different, I believe there is one entity which I call Deity. From this, there are an infinite number of facets that we call the Gods.

What you believe is up to you. That is what makes this Path so personal. You choose who you will follow and how.

Kim suggested The Witches Goddess, by Janet & Stewart Farrar. They also wrote The Witches God, which talks about different male God aspects.

Your question was how do you choose your Deities, or do you. The answer is that they call to you. You will hear about some God or Goddess, and you will learn more about them, and you will feel some connection.

The connection can't be described well in words, the English language lacks the correct terms. You will know it when you feel it. If you don't ever feel it, don't worry.

I connected with Herne long before I ever learned about Wicca or Witchcraft, but after more than 20 years in the Craft, I still have not felt that connection to a particular Goddess. I work with Epona because she is Celtic just as Herne is, but Herne is who called me, and made me His son.

Some people never feel that connection. No God or Goddess calls to them. That is fine, it may never happen for you. In that case, you learn what you can about all the Gods and Goddesses you can, or simply call generically to The God & The Goddess.

How you call to them comes from your heart. Call to them with your heart and they will hear, and they will come. Know that you can talk to them, and that they will respond.

Have confidence in yourself, and know when words come to your mind that are not your own. Those are the words of the Gods.

Trust yourself.

Gods, Goddesses, and Dieties
by: Kim

Merry Meet Jackie,

I am fairly new to Wicca and struggled with the same issues concerning the Gods. My understanding is that there is ONE goddess and ONE god, all the dieties are reflections of that ONE. So, when you come at it from that perspective you can start by praying to the ONE such as Great Mother/Great Father; Mother Earth/Father Sky, etc. Get comfortable with the ONE and start researching the pantheon's. There are a lot of great websites devoted to the pantheon's of different cultures. Researching will help you to find exactly which goddess/god you are drawn to.

Some advice, dont be in a hurry to "find" your matron or patron god/dess. Take the time to study, pray, meditate in order to find the one. A very good book is "The Witch's Goddess" by Farrar & Farrar. You will probably have to order it on line.

Concerning invoking specific gods into a circle: like I said, I am fairly new and just found my matron goddess, so up until now I have been invoking the Great Mother/Great Father.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
