How to learn healing?

What are the best paths of studies that will bring about usable knowledge of healing. Energy? Herbalism? Magic?

A friend of mine died not long ago from cancer. Being a witch doesn't make you a God. But I know from published research that prayer, whether it comes from a Buddhist or Christian in large numbers, has been proven to enhance healing in blind studies. I believe this was focused energy.
