Who are the ''oldest'' named female deities?

by Michael
(North Carolina)

I feel drawn to many female deities but was wondering who the oldest was, Please don't include Venus of Willendorfs I mean actually named Goddesses. I have heard Cybele, Ishtar, Isis, etc but was wondering who the true oldest known named Goddess actually is.

Oldest dieties NEW

Every culture that has records of it's history will have it's own deities. so which cultures developed first? Indian and Chinese have long histories...I love Quan Yin, And she is of both of these cultures.

the Mesopotamian Tigress, Euphrates Rivers of present day Iraq is another possibility. Inanna is the Goddess in this area.

Archeologists are only beginning to uncover ancient Africa...and S. America

Greek, Eqyptian, Roman, Etruscan...wherever you find people you find the Goddess. she is the soul of nature, so she is at least three days older than dirt, if you get my drift.

One suggestion...

I reckon you might want to look into the Goddess 'Danu'. In the celtic tradition she is the mother goddess of the tuatha de danaan (red-headed magical race of ancient ireland)and is also the Hinu goddess of the primeval waters and mother-goddess of a race named the Danavas - found in the vedic texts of india which are dated to have been written around 5000BC (some say the legends of the Vedas were passed down via word of mouth from as early as 9000BC)

Where's the conection? I personally theorise that Danu moved with migrating peoples from India across continents through asia and Europe. The Evidence? Place names. as follows: The river 'DANUbe' in Romania; Rivers in Scotland, England and Russia called 'the DON' (supposedly a derivitive of her name as in Wales she was called DON);

hope this was helpful and that your search leads you to your deity. any blessings x

Eldest Historical Goddesses
by: Gwynalda

Since ancient Sumer was founded around 3000 B.C.E. and has the oldest cuneiform writing that has survived into modern times, I'd vote for the Ladies from that pantheon:

Inanna (Queen of Heaven & Earth)
Ereshkigal (Queen of the Underworld)
Ki or Urash (Earth Goddess)
Nammu (Goddess of the Watery Deep)
Ninlil (Air Goddess)
Ningikuga (Reed Lady)
Sirtur or Ninsun (Sheep Goddess)
Ningal (Moon Goddess)
Geshtinanna (Lady of the Vine)

See "Inanna" by Diane Wolkstein & Samuel Noah Kramer for more info.

Next, I'd rank Ancient Egypt's Goddesses. Everyone's heard of Isis, but She actually acquired many of the attributes of an even older deity, Hathor (Het-her, or Het-Heru).
